Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture

Swiss not-for-profit scaling sustainable innovation for smallholder farmers (now Sustainable Agriculture Foundation)

Sustainable Agriculture Foundation (formerly Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture)

The Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture (SFSA) is a Swiss-based, not-for-profit organization headquartered in Basel, Switzerland. Established in 2001, it works to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in poorer regions of the world by developing and scaling sustainable innovation in smallholder agri-food systems. It has primarily acted as an implementing foundation that bridges the gap between agricultural research and the delivery of innovations to farmers.

The Foundation's operational strategy focuses on smallholders, productivity, and markets, partnering with organizations in developing countries and emerging markets. Its aim is to help small farmers become more professional growers by extending science-based know-how, facilitating access to quality inputs, and linking smallholders to markets in profitable ways. Core program streams have included agriservices, risk management and financial inclusion (such as affordable agricultural insurance), and access to seeds through plant breeding and technology transfer.

Notably, the organization has been undergoing a rebrand and now also operates publicly as the Sustainable Agriculture Foundation (SAF). SAF describes itself as delivering demand-led innovations in agriculture and focuses on enhancing productivity and market access for "pre-commercial" smallholder farmers, primarily in semi-arid areas with agricultural growth potential. Country operations have followed suit, such as the launch of SAF Bangladesh in Dhaka (formerly SFSA).

SAF works to transform smallholder agriculture across Asia and Africa by improving farmer incomes, food security, and climate resilience. Because the Foundation centers on extending science-based know-how and scaling sustainable agricultural innovations to smallholders, advances in this space are directly relevant to its mission and delivery model.
