Tradewater
Mission-based environmental company that collects and destroys potent greenhouse gases to generate carbon offset credits
Tradewater — Our StoryTradewater is a mission-based environmental company and Certified B Corporation focused on combating climate change by collecting and permanently destroying potent greenhouse gases—particularly old refrigerants considered ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and greenhouse gases (GHG). This destruction work generates independently verified, high-quality carbon offset credits that fund further collection. The company operates under the corporate name "Tradewater, LLC."
The company was founded in 2016 by Tim Brown (CEO) along with Gabriel Bankier Plotkin (COO). The original insight behind the business was that ozone-depleting substances such as CFCs qualified for emissions reduction work, and that these gases could still be purchased on platforms like eBay. Tradewater developed a collection program across 49 U.S. states, locating old refrigerant cylinders, cans, and chillers, and has since expanded globally.
Tradewater is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois (1411 W. Carroll Street) and operates around the world. To date, it has destroyed over 4,100,000 metric tons of CO2-equivalent from old refrigerants. Its international work includes a landmark carbon offset project in Thailand, where it permanently destroyed more than 19 metric tons of ozone-depleting refrigerant gas.
The company describes its mission as creating, developing, and implementing high-value projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, delivering verifiable, permanent climate impact and sustainable economic benefit through the highest quality carbon offset credits. Innovation in greenhouse gas collection, destruction, and carbon credit verification is directly relevant to its core business model.
