Transport for London

Transport for London (TfL) is a local government body and functional arm of the Greater London Authority (GLA), established in 2000 to serve as London's integrated transport authority and deliver the Mayor of London's transport strategy. It is the successor to the London Passenger Transport Board, which dates to 1933. TfL is governed by a board appointed by the Mayor of London (currently Sadiq Khan) and led by Commissioner Andy Lord.

TfL operates or oversees a broad range of transport modes, including the London Underground, Docklands Light Railway, London Overground, the Elizabeth line, buses, trams, taxis, cycling provision, principal road routes, and river services. Services are delivered through a mix of wholly owned subsidiaries, private-sector franchisees, and licensees.

At considerable scale, TfL recorded approximately 3.6 billion passenger journeys in fiscal year 2023/24 — up around nine percent year-on-year — and employs roughly 29,400 people. Its 2024/25 budget targeted 3.8 billion journeys. Notable milestones include the introduction of the Oyster card and contactless payments in the mid-2000s, the Night Tube launch in 2016, and the completion of the Crossrail/Elizabeth line project in 2022.

TfL is primarily funded by the GLA and the Mayor of London, with central government contributions having been significantly reduced over the 2010s, pushing the organisation toward greater financial self-sufficiency. As a large urban transport authority managing billions of journeys and complex multimodal infrastructure, TfL is highly relevant to innovations in transit operations, passenger experience, and urban mobility.
