UN-Habitat About UsEstablished in 1977 and headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, UN-Habitat is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. It serves as the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system, working in over 90 countries to build inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable communities.
The organization's mandate has evolved from a focus on human settlements in vulnerable contexts to a strategic approach addressing rapid urban growth and the factors affecting sustainable city planning. It acts as a custodian agency for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 and is the focal point for the implementation, follow-up, and review of the New Urban Agenda (NUA).
