The company generates power through a diverse mix of sources including wind, nuclear, hydro, natural gas, solar, coal, biomass, and waste. It owns and operates about 139,000 km of power lines and serves around 900,000 customers in Sweden alone, where it is the largest owner and operator of regional electricity networks. Vattenfall also produces and distributes district heating to households and industries in metropolitan areas.
Beyond generation and distribution, Vattenfall provides a range of energy services including battery storage, EV charging solutions, heat pumps, solar panels, smart meters, and gas and energy trading. In 2023, net sales reached SEK 290,168 million, though 2024 saw a decline to SEK 245.6 billion due to lower electricity and gas prices and divestment of heat operations.
Vattenfall has a stated goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, approved by the Science Based Targets initiative. In 2024, it increased installed wind capacity by 34%, including commissioning the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind park capable of supplying 1.5 million Dutch households, reflecting its active push into large-scale renewable energy.
