WHO – Who We Are (Official Site)

The World Health Organization (WHO) is the United Nations' specialized agency for global health, established in 1948 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. Its mission is the "attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health," and it is governed by 194 Member States who convene annually at the World Health Assembly to set global health priorities.

WHO is led by Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, elected in May 2017 at the Seventieth World Health Assembly. Under his leadership, WHO achieved gender parity in senior leadership for the first time and introduced intern stipends. His five stated priorities include universal health coverage, health emergencies, women's and children's health, and the health impacts of climate and environmental factors.

WHO's Geneva campus employs approximately 2,400 staff, and the organization operates with a Programme Budget of US$6,834 million for 2024–2025, funded through assessed membership dues and voluntary contributions. Core activities include coordinating international responses to health emergencies and disease outbreaks, and advocating for improved health outcomes worldwide.

As the foremost intergovernmental body in global health, WHO is highly relevant to any innovation in public health policy, disease surveillance, health systems strengthening, or emergency response — areas where it sets standards and mobilizes resources across its 194 member countries.
