WorldFish

WorldFish (formally the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management, ICLARM) is a leading international research organization working to improve food security, nutrition, and livelihoods through aquatic food systems that are sustainable, equitable, and inclusive. Its mission is to end hunger and advance sustainable development by 2030 through science and innovation, with a vision of an inclusive world of healthy, well-nourished people and a sustainable blue planet.

Formed in 1975, WorldFish is headquartered in Penang, Malaysia. It began as a fisheries research center within the University of Hawaii and has grown into a global research and innovation institution recognized for its contributions to sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in low- and middle-income countries. In 2025 the organization marks its 50th anniversary.

WorldFish is a member of CGIAR — part of One CGIAR, described as the world's largest agricultural innovation network — and operates across 20 countries in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific with 460 staff of 30 nationalities. Its work is delivered through donor-funded projects backed by governments, private foundations, and international and regional organizations.

Innovation is central to WorldFish's work: it has introduced technologies to scale local aquatic food production through partner networks, most notably the development of Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT). This makes advances in aquaculture and aquatic food systems directly relevant to its mission.
