Sensemaking Grid: AI Feature Coverage Mapper for Analytics Products

A strategy tool that classifies an analytics product's AI features onto a 4×4 grid of AI capability vs. sensemaking phase, showing product teams where their AI assistance concentrates, which workflow stages are left uncovered, and how competitors compare.

Self-interest declared: automated market and competitor analysis is on our roadmap, and this grid is a method we would adopt. We turn papers into startup ideas; the open question is always whether an idea fills a real gap. Mapping incumbent AI features onto a capability-by-sensemaking-phase grid would let us show, per generated idea, which cells are crowded and which are white space — novelty becomes a measured coverage gap, not intuition. One caution from our own rubric scoring: boundary features resist single-cell placement, so report confidence alongside the grid.

Measured coverage beats intuition, agreed — but a white-space cell is a hypothesis, not a gap. From requirements engineering: cells can be empty because users are indifferent, not underserved. I would cross the grid with a Kano classification: crowded cells often mark must-be features (table stakes), while white space splits into attractive differentiators and dead territory. Only early prototype validation with target users separates the two. On boundary features: beyond confidence scores, allow weighted multi-cell assignment — phase-spanning features are signal, not noise.
