Sidecar: A Private AI Explainer for Guests in Live Data Screen-Shares

An app that lets guests ask private questions about a shared data chart without interrupting the presenter.

A companion app for live data presentations: guests privately tap any chart on their own screen and ask basic questions in text or voice, getting answers grounded in the dashboard's own metadata — without interrupting the presenter.

Concept

Sidecar is a companion web app that rides alongside any teleconference. The host of a remote data review adds a Sidecar link next to the meeting invite; Sidecar ingests the dashboard's own specification and metadata (Vega-Lite spec, field descriptions, semantic model — artifacts authors already maintain). During the live screen-share, each guest opens Sidecar on a second screen, sees a lightweight mirrored outline of the current view, taps any chart element, and asks "what does this color encode?" or "why did Q3 dip?" in text or by voice. An LLM answers, grounded in the dashboard metadata. Questions are private by default, so no one has to stop the presentation to admit confusion; after the session the host receives an anonymized confusion digest showing which charts generated the most questions, feeding the next revision of the deck or dashboard. One wedge: comprehension for the least data-literate person in the room, at zero social cost.

Why now

[0] elevates Individual Differences & Interpersonal Dynamics to one of four core challenge themes and flags static screen-sharing as the limiting factor in joint data engagement — and the guest with the least expertise is precisely the person least able to interrupt a live presentation and ask. The 29-expert challenge characterization [1] puts multimodal communication at the center of the five collaborative activities, including presentation, where newcomer comprehension is a recurring friction. Crucially, the hard part is already demonstrated: [6] shows that LLMs can deliver dashboard onboarding across voice, text, and pointing modalities, replacing onboarding materials that are labor-intensive to prepare and go stale when dashboards change. Sidecar only re-points that proven capability at a live, multi-participant context and adds privacy defaults plus a session mirror — sized as an add-on to existing teleconferences, not a new meeting platform.

AI assessment

Backed by 3 papers81

A clever, high-utility application of multimodal dashboard AI that solves a specific social friction (the 'fear of asking') in high-stakes corporate presentations.

Evidence strength
4/5
The idea directly leverages the proven capability of 'Diana' [2] to provide multimodal onboarding and combines it with the identified pain points of remote data collaboration [1, 3].
Market pull
5/5
Management consultants and BI analysts face a constant struggle to ensure client comprehension without stalling the momentum of a presentation, creating a strong value proposition.
Novelty & moat
3/5
While it shares the underlying AI mechanism with the 'Multimodal Dashboard Navigator,' it pivots the value proposition from 'navigation' to 'socially-safe comprehension' in a live setting.
Feasibility
3/5
The AI logic is demonstrated, but the 'mirrored outline' of a live screen-share requires tight integration or a specific dashboard export format to be truly seamless.
Wedge clarity
5/5
The 'private explainer for the least data-literate person' is a sharp, emotionally resonant entry point that avoids the 'platform' trap.
Simplicity / focus
4/5
The product is focused on a single interaction loop: tap, ask, answer, and a post-session digest for the host.

Who benefits

  • Microsoftcompany

Power BI teams could ship a 'guest mode' so external stakeholders self-serve explanations during shared sessions, eliminating the labor-intensive walkthrough materials dashboard authors currently maintain by hand.

  • Client steering meetings run on dense analytics, and clients rarely interrupt to ask basic questions; a private explainer preserves comprehension and rapport while the post-meeting confusion digest sharpens the next client deck.

  • Deloittecompany

Advisory and audit reviews mix participants with widely varying data literacy; Sidecar lets each guest close their own knowledge gap live without slowing the review.

  • Zoomcompany

A Sidecar app in the Zoom marketplace that works over any screen-share differentiates data-heavy client and internal meetings on the platform.
