TourDraft: Auto-Drafted Onboarding Tours for BI Dashboards

A plugin that automatically creates step-by-step guided tours to help people learn how to use a dashboard.

A plugin for Power BI, Tableau, Looker, and Metabase that reads a dashboard's own structure and auto-drafts a step-by-step interactive onboarding tour, which the author reviews, edits, and publishes in-dashboard.

Concept

TourDraft is an authoring-side extension for BI platforms that semi-automatically turns a dashboard's definition into a first-draft interactive guided tour. It ingests the dashboard's structure — its views, chart types, data fields, filters, and available interactions — and drafts a step-by-step tour that highlights each component and explains what it shows and how to interact with it. The dashboard author then reviews the draft in a lightweight editor: reorder steps, tweak annotations, delete what is irrelevant, and publish. New viewers get the tour inside the dashboard itself. The single wedge is eliminating the blank-page cost of onboarding authoring, so shared dashboards ship with a tour instead of with nothing.

Why now

D-Tour [0][1] demonstrates that interactive guided tours for dashboard onboarding can be generated semi-automatically, and its abstract names exactly the bottleneck TourDraft attacks: authoring onboarding is time-consuming, requires significant knowledge, and offers little guidance on how to do it well, while end users range from confused and overwhelmed to disengaged depending on their expertise. "Hey Dashboard!" [2] independently corroborates the pain — preparing onboarding materials is labor-intensive — and the visual analytics guidance literature [6] establishes guided support as a recognized, unmet need in analytics tools. Readiness caveat: the demonstrated capability is generation with an author in the loop, so the product is sized as a draft-then-curate workflow (minutes of review per dashboard), not a fully automatic tour builder.

Backed by 4 papers86

A focused, high-utility tool that solves the 'blank page' problem for dashboard authors by automating the first draft of onboarding tours.

Evidence strength
5/5
The idea is directly supported by D-Tour and 'Hey Dashboard!', with the former specifically demonstrating a prototype for semi-automated tour generation and the latter confirming the labor-intensive nature of manual onboarding.
Market pull
4/5
Enterprise BI users (Power BI, Tableau) face a genuine pain point where complex dashboards are often underutilized because authors lack the time to create onboarding guides.
Novelty & moat
3/5
While similar to the 'Interactive Viz-Onboarding Engine', this shifts the value proposition from real-time user adaptation to authoring-side efficiency (auto-drafting), creating a distinct wedge.
Feasibility
4/5
Since BI tools have structured metadata (JSON/XML definitions of charts and filters), a small team could build a parser and a template-based generator to create a demoable MVP.
Wedge clarity
5/5
The wedge is extremely sharp: eliminating the 'blank-page cost' for the author, rather than trying to solve the entire user experience of the dashboard.
Simplicity / focus
5/5
The product is a single, focused utility (auto-drafting tool) with a clear workflow: ingest structure, draft tour, author review, publish.

Who benefits

  • Power BI is deployed to millions of business users who routinely receive shared dashboards with no explanation; an auto-drafted tour feature would cut onboarding friction and support load, and is a cheap differentiator at Power BI's scale.

  • Tableau workbooks are shared across large organizations and authors currently hand-build training materials; auto-drafting tours from the workbook's own structure removes that cost and increases reuse of shared dashboards.

  • Userpilotcompany

Userpilot's customers hand-craft every step of in-app tours; for analytics-heavy apps, auto-drafting tour steps from the dashboard definition removes the biggest authoring bottleneck in their product.

  • Metabasecompany

Metabase is sold as self-serve analytics for non-technical teams and is embedded in customer products; auto-generated tours let Metabase customers onboard their end users without building training content themselves.

  • ioradcompany

iorad automates capture of software how-to guides; auto-drafting interactive dashboard tours from the dashboard's definition is a natural adjacent capability extending it from generic UIs to data dashboards.
