  • Synthesized fifteen Ru(II) tetraaza macrocyclic complexes [RuCl2 L1-15] with octahedral geometry. (Reaction of [RuCl2(PPh3)4] with macrocyclic Schiff base ligands L1-L15 in ethanol)
  • Complexes exhibit non-electrolytic nature. — 12.0-20.0 ohm-1 cm2 mol-1 molar conductance (Measured in acetone at room temperature)
  • Coordination occurs through the nitrogen of the C=N group. — IR band at 500-520 cm-1 (vRu-N) (All fifteen complexes)
  • Chloride ions are positioned trans to each other around the ruthenium ion. — Single IR band at 300-320 cm-1 (All fifteen complexes)
  • Complexes are diamagnetic. — Magnetic moment < 1.0 BM (Room temperature)
  • Electronic transitions identified as spin-allowed and charge transfer. — Bands at 460-520 nm and 280-290 nm (UV-Visible spectra of all complexes)
Setup
15 distinct Ru(II) complexes synthesized using diamines with chain lengths n=2 to 6.
How
Macrocyclic Schiff base ligands were prepared by refluxing 2,5-diformylfuran or phenanthrene 9,10-dione with aliphatic diamines in ethanol, followed by reaction with [RuCl2(PPh3)4]. Characterization was performed using elemental analysis, molar conductivity, IR, UV-Visible, XPS, and magnetic susceptibility measurements.
Limitations
Geometry is provisionally proposed based on spectral data rather than X-ray crystallography.
