Agentic Viz Pattern Cards

A library of design patterns that helps product teams decide how AI agents should work together in BI tools.

A subscription library of practitioner-ready design pattern cards — agent roles, coordination styles, and communication patterns — that product teams consult when adding AI agents to analytics and BI tools.

Cognitive-Adaptive Visual AnalyticsBI/analytics software product design — a UX pattern library for teams building AI copilot features.

Concept

A searchable web library where each card documents one pattern from the paper's taxonomy of agentic visualization: the four agent roles (Forager, Analyst, Chart Creator, Data Steward), the coordination patterns (Scouting, Swarming, Monitoring), and the communication patterns (Progress Indicators, Provenance Logs). Each card states what the pattern is, when to use it, an example system, and implementation guidance, tagged by pattern type, autonomy level, and data type. A product team designing a chart-building copilot searches for how users can know what the agent is doing and retrieves the Progress Indicator card with reference UI snippets. The single wedge: turn the first systematic taxonomy of agentic visualization into a design-time lookup resource.

Why now

Paper [0] is the first work to extract and name these patterns from a comprehensive analysis of both pre-LLM and LLM-based visualization systems; before it, teams shipping copilots in Power BI, Tableau, and ThoughtSpot had no shared vocabulary for agent roles, coordination, or agent-to-human communication. Survey [1] documents that understanding of agentic AI is fragmented and prone to conflating symbolic and neural paradigms — a tagged pattern library is the standard remedy for exactly that fragmentation. The visualization field has a two-decade habit of converting systematic reviews into reusable practitioner knowledge, as the 340-article, 17-venue review in [3] illustrates, and every major BI vendor is currently shipping or planning copilot features, creating immediate demand for this design guidance.

AI assessment

Backed by 3 papers85

A low-risk, high-utility knowledge product that converts a specific academic taxonomy into a practical design resource for the booming BI copilot market.

Evidence strength
5/5
The idea maps directly to the specific roles, coordination, and communication patterns explicitly identified in the full text of Paper [2].
Market pull
4/5
Major BI vendors (Tableau, Power BI, Qlik) are aggressively integrating AI agents, creating a high-urgency need for standardized UX patterns to avoid fragmented user experiences.
Novelty & moat
2/5
The idea is a direct 'pattern library' version of the 'Agent Delegation Cockpit' already in the catalog, using the same underlying taxonomy.
Feasibility
5/5
Building a searchable web library of cards based on existing research requires minimal technical overhead and can be prototyped in days.
Wedge clarity
5/5
The wedge is extremely sharp: a design-time lookup resource for the first systematic taxonomy of agentic visualization.
Simplicity / focus
5/5
It avoids platform creep by focusing solely on a subscription-based knowledge library.

Who benefits

  • Qlikcompany

Its Insight Advisor team can pattern-match its current automated-insight UX against the cards to find gaps (e.g., missing Progress Indicators or provenance) before competitors close them.

  • Its AI/BI product design team gets a ready-made taxonomy for structuring copilot behavior instead of inventing agent roles and communication conventions from scratch.

  • The UX research and consulting firm advises enterprises on AI interface design; a licensed pattern library gives its AI UX practice a citable, structured foundation for agentic analytics engagements.

  • Sisensecompany

Its embedded-analytics AI features could be designed against the pattern cards, speeding UX decisions for AI-augmented dashboards embedded in customer products.

  • It could license the cards for its UX courses covering AI-augmented analytics, filling a curriculum gap in how to design agent-based visualization features.
